Ferro Silicon Inoculant Specifications

Ferrosilicon, also known as silicon granules or ferro silicon inoculant, is a commonly used additive in steelmaking and ironmaking. It is mainly consist of silicon and iron, with the chemical formula FeSi. The silicon content in ferrosilicon is usually between 70% and 75%, and the iron content is between 20% and 25%. Ferrosilicon granules may also contain small amounts of other impurity elements, such as manganese, chromium, molybdenum, nickel, vanadium, etc. This material is usually in the form of gray metal particles, with a high density (7.2 ~ 7.8 g/cm³) and melting point (about 1200℃), is hard to oxidize at high temperatures, and has a high magnetic susceptibility.

Applications of Inoculant

In the metallurgical industry, the main function of the inoculant is to promote graphitization, reduce the tendency of white cast iron, improve the morphology and distribution of graphite, increase the number of eutectic clusters, and refine the matrix structure. Ferrosilicon is the most common inoculant. In the production of ductile iron, ferrosilicon as an inoculant and spheroidizer can effectively prevent the formation of carbides in iron, promote the precipitation and spheroidization of graphite, and thus improve the performance of cast iron. The use of ferrosilicon inoculants can also prevent the appearance of white spots in thin-walled castings, significantly refine the eutectic clusters, and improve the strength of castings and the hardness of thick-walled castings.

In the steelmaking industry, ferrosilicon particles can be used as deoxidizers and alloying agents to help remove oxygen and other impurities in molten steel and improve the quality of steel. In the cast iron industry, ferrosilicon particles as inoculants and spheroidizers can prevent the formation of carbides in iron, promote the precipitation and spheroidization of graphite, and thus improve the performance of cast iron. At the same time, ferrosilicon particles can also reduce the generation of waste slag and improve the quality of castings.

FeSi Granules and FeSiBa Granules

Ferrosilicon granules come in a variety of sizes, but the most common is ferrosilicon 72 granules inoculant. The second most common is ferrosilicon 70 granules. Ferrosilicon 75 also works well, but due to its high price, most foundries do not use it as an inoculating agent material. Some factories use Ferrosilicon 65 as inoculant to save costs. Ferrosilicon granules have a variety of particle sizes, the most common ones are 0.2-0.8mm, 1-3mm, 3-8mm, 8-15mm, etc. Since the product is granular, it is generally packaged in 25kg small bags and then in 1MT big bags. Sometimes, it can also be stacked on pallets for transportation according to demand.

In addition to Ferrosilicon, there is another common Silicon Barium alloy. This Silicon Barium inoculant contains a certain amount of barium. It also works well in actual use. As an experienced manufacturer, Highrise Metal Material is capable to produce and supply both FeSi and SiBa inoculant for customers. Moreover, not only the chemical composition and sizes are customizable according to the users’ requirement, but also wide packing methods is provided.
